Weeks 3 and 4

Another busy couple of weeks in Room 14.
We had two sessions with Life Ed and Harold discussing what good friends do.

Monday mornings for the next few weeks we will be learning hockey skills. This week we learnt how to hold our hockey sticks properly and to do a closed and open dribble.

Some of the Nikau reading group presented their inquiry work. These two presented about the human brain.

We were busy preparing for assembly this week, getting our geometric art ready to show. Our presenters wrote their scripts and got the slides ready. They should all be proud of their efforts. They had a bit of a dance party at the end to celebrate.

The Kauri reading group made us some yummy gingerbread people that we got to decorate and eat.

We did a fun kahoot to practise our knowledge of compass directions.

We had a sweet spot to cheer on the Tui's cross country.  They did so well and Room 14 were great supporters.

On Monday we had an interesting talk about the brain and how it works.

Geometry scavenger hunt by Harper and Daniel

In our scavenger hunt, we were looking for different patterns
of geometry.

these bricks are in a translating pattern.

the astroturf has
a vertical and horizontal line of symmetry.
the targets also have a translating pattern in it.

this plank of wood has a vertical
 pattern of symmetry.

the basketball court has a rotation pattern.

the steps have a rotating pattern.

Week 1 Term 2

We have had such a fun and busy week in room 14.

Monday was kicked off with a BREAKOUT!!! Stham the anti maths man had broken into our class in the holidays and locked our geometry equipment in a box with 4 locks. We had to solve lots of puzzles to figure out the codes and get our equipment so we could start learning. It was great to see everyone get involved and collaborate effectively to unlock the box. This term we are going to be doing a bit of work to convince Stham that maths is heaps of fun and anyone can be successful in maths if they work hard.

Geometry is our focus this term in maths along with learning some great strategies to solve addition or subtraction problems.  This week we have explored symmetry and learned about different 2D shapes. We also looked at Cubism and the works of artists such as Picasso and Mondrian. We then created our own masterpieces.  We are now working on some optical illusion art which is challenging but we love a challenge.

Between swimming and cross country training we are doing our best to keep fit. We will be setting goals for cross country and swimming and working really hard to achieve them.

We did a fun activity called the thirty circle challenge where we had to turn 30 circles into 30 different things in 15 minutes. This warmed our creative brains up for coming up with 50 ideas in 15 minutes on how we might contribute to our community. We now need to filter those ideas.

Can't wait for next week!
